This paper aims to study the social basis of political careers of those who served as ministers in the in Argentina (1854-2011). Avoiding the differentiation between political and non-political objects, we analyze the main networks for socialization and sociability both outside the political sphere and within the party system. From this analytical work six typical profiles emerge: the heirs, the alumni, the clubists, the faithful, the experts and the bosses. This allows us to obtain evidence of "extrapolitical" factors that go beyond political parties and electoral competition and which play a significant role in the origins and development of political trajectories.
