1. Introduction
Política, Revista de Ciencia Política is committed to promoting transparency, reproducibility, and accessibility in research. In line with the principles of open science, this policy sets forth guidelines for the management and publication of research data associated with the scientific articles published in our journal.
2. Reference Framework
The open data policy of Política, Revista de Ciencia Política is grounded in a normative framework that integrates international principles, national guidelines, and institutional regulations. It adheres to the Budapest (2002), Berlin (2003), and Barcelona (2023) Declarations, as well as the UNESCO (2021) Recommendations on Open Science, international collaboration, equity, and the recognition of knowledge. It is also aligned with the ANID Open Access Policy (2022), which requires the availability of publications and data in open repositories, and with the Open Science Regulation of the University of Chile (2023), which establishes principles, obligations, and safeguards for the responsible opening of research.
3. FAIR Principles
The following fundamental principles govern research data management:
Accessibility: Data used in articles should be made publicly available whenever no ethical, legal, or confidentiality restrictions prevent their release.
Reproducibility: Shared data should enable verification and replication of the results presented in the articles, thereby fostering transparency and research quality.
Interoperability: Authors are encouraged to use open formats and recognized standards that facilitate data reuse and exchange across platforms.
Citation and Acknowledgment: Data must be properly cited, assigned a unique identifier such as a DOI, and accompanied by open licenses recognizing authorship or responsibility.
4. Requirements for Authors
Authors are encouraged to consider the following:
Voluntary nature of data publication: The publication of research data is voluntary. It is not mandatory for authors, nor is it a requirement for article publication in the journal.
Types of research data:
1. Priority will be given to primary or raw data that allow for the reproduction of analyses and results presented in the articles. Data not directly related to reproducing reported results will be treated as complementary, annexed, or supplementary data and will not be deposited in the Research Data Repository or thematic repositories.
2. Priority quantitative data: Datasets that allow for the replication of quantitative analyses reported in published articles, duly anonymized.
3. Priority qualitative data: Transcripts of individual or group interviews, observations, or other formats enabling the reproduction of qualitative analyses reported in published articles, duly anonymized.
Data deposition
1. Authors are encouraged to link their data through the integration of the Academic Journals Portal with the Research Data Repository of the University of Chile, or 2.Through thematic repositories or repositories required by funding agencies (e.g., Zenodo, OSF, Figshare, Dryad, among others), preferably prior to the article’s publication.
Format and documentation
-Data should be provided in open, machine-readable formats (e.g., .csv for data and .txt for data dictionaries).
- Data must be accompanied by sufficient documentation (metadata, variable dictionaries, analysis code).
Data citation:
1.The dataset must be cited in the article’s reference list.
2. A permanent identifier (DOI) must be included to ensure accessibility, verification, and proper citation.
Exceptions and restrictions
When data are confidential or sensitive, authors must justify restricted access and, when possible, provide anonymized or aggregated versions.
5. Evaluation and Compliance
During the peer-review process, the editorial team and external reviewers may request access to research data linked to the article to verify their quality, consistency, and reproducibility of the reported results. This may influence the acceptance or rejection of the manuscript.
Política, Revista de Ciencia Política reserves the right to review data associated with accepted articles to ensure research integrity and compliance with reference frameworks, principles, and ethical standards.
6. Data Licensing and Use
Each dataset will be assigned an appropriate license, with Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) as the preferred option. This license allows distribution, adaptation, reuse, and commercialization of data, provided proper attribution of authorship or responsibility is given.
Users of the data must cite them properly and respect the terms of the assigned license. To facilitate this, it is recommended to use the citation format proposed by the repository where the dataset is hosted (e.g., the Research Data Repository of the University of Chile or another thematic repository). If no specific format is available, authors should follow the data citation guidelines recommended by FORCE11, which promote proper and standardized recognition of authorship and data provenance.
7. Data Protection and Ethical Standards
The protection of personal data shall comply with Chilean national legislation and applicable international agreements, particularly Law No. 19.628, as well as other relevant institutional regulations, such as Exempt Resolution No. 061 (2021) of the University of Chile, which complement, amend, or replace this legal framework.
In practice, all research involving human participants or live animals must undergo review by an ethics committee. Researchers must protect participants’ privacy, including clear descriptions of how information will be accessed.
Informed consent is considered a fundamental aspect of ethical data management. It must inform participants how their data will be used, who will have access, and how they will be published, ensuring approval prior to data collection.
The following best practices are also recommended:
-Collect only strictly necessary data, avoiding, where possible, the use of personally identifiable information.
-Anonymize or remove identifying details from data as early as possible.
-Avoid electronic transmission of personal data without encryption.
