Political arenas and social movements: lessons from the Chilean Constitutional Convention

Abstract
The participation of social movements in the Chilean constitutional process is analysed. From an initial phase of challenge, which they led, an institutional arena also opened up, with broad participation, during the Constitutional Convention. In the September 2022 plebiscite, the result of this process was overwhelmingly defeated. How can we explain what happened without relying on a single cause, but rather by delving into the inherent characteristics of the process that allow us to do so? The notion of political arenas is used to explain the different outcomes achieved by these movements. This refers to the fact that social and political action has different effects depending on the political arenas in which it operates. This allows for the inclusion of conservative-oriented movements and situates the analysis of the political consequences of collective action within a broader, always relational, framework that includes the electoral and institutional rules in which they develop.
