Abstract
This paper examines the internal democracy of Latin American political parties through the analysis of their statutes and official websites. A multidimensional index, based on the +Democracy project, was developed to assess five dimensions: internal organization, candidate selection systems, members’ rights, transparency, and ethical codes. The study covers 125 parties across 16 countries, highlighting that while most parties regulate internal organization and members’ rights, significant gaps remain regarding ethical codes and candidate selection procedures. Findings suggest that internal democracy continues to be a major challenge for Latin American parties, with direct implications for the overall quality of democratic regimes in the region.
