Venture capital for bio-entrepreneurship and regional integration: an opportunity for a new symbiosis

Abstract

This article discusses the opportunity of regional integration through the bioeconomy in Latin America to promote the development of bioentrepreneurship by attracting venture capital. In this sense, it highlights the importance of the bioeconomy as an avenue for productive diversification. However, it also highlights the challenges faced by bio-entrepreneurs such as the lack of an enabling environment, the informality of business and the difficulty of accessing finance. The article shows the importance of venture capital as a source of support for the development of bio-entrepreneurship and mentions the need for public institutions to foster its growth. It concludes that regional integration in the bioeconomy can be an opportunity to attract venture capital and strengthen the development of bioentrepreneurship.

Author Biographies

Celestina Porras, Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura - OEA

Celestina is a Political Scientist from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and an Internationalist from the National University (UNA). Currently, she is pursuing a new degree in International Relations from UNA with a concentration in trade policy.  She is currently a specialist in bioeconomy and cooperation in  IICA’s Innovation and Bioeconomy Program and  is part of the first cohort of the Krishner Impact Foundation in Costa Rica, which focuses primarily on bioeconomy entrepreneurs. There, she has the possibility to do an investment in a Costa Rican company.

Miltred Jiménez, Deep Science Venture

Mildred Jiménez holds a B.Eng degree in Biotechnology and a MSc. in Nanotechnology from Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico. She currently, holds the role of Associate in Venture Creation at Deep Science Ventures, specializing in the Agriculture Sector. Here, she leverages scientific knowledge and collaborates with founder-type scientists to create high-impact ventures, all with a shared vision of shaping a future where both humanity and the planet thrive.

Javier Alejandro Valero Fuentes, Tecnológico de Monterrey

Genomic Biotechnologist. Coordinator of Synergies and Alliances at the Center of Excellence in Science and Technology Based Entrepreneurship from Tecnológico de Monterrey. Specialist in business intelligence and technology commercialization. Experience in product development, technical and market validation.
