Abstract

For more than six years the people of the Autonomous Republic of Chechnya fought for their independence. It was fought hard by the Russian Federation under whose jurisdiction it is organized. It was a long conflict that did not have the support of the West and, therefore, defending the human rights of Chechens would have been too expensive for those who advocate that genocide is a war crime. On the other hand, Chechen separatist guerrillas have been accused of genocide against ethnic and religious minorities. The Russian Federation clearly demonstrated that it continues to be an international power that is governed by its own interests and values, just as the others do. This is the reality and the demonstration that the relations between the nations of the world are based on the balance of powers.
