Abstract

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea established the Exclusive Economic Zone and gave rules for fishing on the high seas. The expansion of the zone in which the State exercises sovereign rights, prompted the remote fishing States to create mechanisms that would allow them to continue fishing in the sea areas that were previously part of the high seas, which has caused pressures on coastal states. At the same time, the rules regarding the fishing of specific marine resources, such as straddling and highly migratory species, have created various tensions between the remote fishing States and the coastal States. This article attempts to reflect the current tensions.
